Choosing a Software Development Company
Everyone claims senior engineers and agile delivery. Here is how to tell the difference, using things you can check rather than things you are told.

If you are looking for a company to build an AI product, the honest starting point is this: almost every "top AI development companies" list you will find is published on the blog of a company that appears in it, usually near the top. That includes this one. We are a software studio that builds AI systems, and we are on the list below.
That does not make these lists useless, but it changes how to read them. The useful information is not the ranking — it is which companies do which kind of work, because "AI development company" covers at least four different businesses that are not substitutes for each other.
Work out which of these you need before you talk to anyone. Picking from the wrong category is the most expensive mistake in this process, and it is usually made in the first week.
| If you need | You want | Not |
|---|---|---|
| A model trained on your own data, research-grade | An ML/data-science consultancy | A product studio |
| An AI feature inside a product you already run | A product engineering studio | An ML research shop |
| A chatbot over your documentation or knowledge base | A RAG specialist | A generalist agency |
| An enterprise-wide AI strategy and rollout | A large consultancy | A ten-person studio |
Named alphabetically, described by their own public positioning rather than by any ranking we have invented. This is a starting shortlist to research, not a verdict.
A data science and AI consultancy, positioned around machine learning, computer vision and data engineering. Worth a look when the problem is genuinely a modelling problem rather than a product one. indatalabs.com
One of the larger AI development firms, positioned across generative AI, agents and enterprise deployment. The kind of firm that suits a broad, multi-team programme. leewayhertz.com
Positioned around conversational AI and chatbot development, with a long history in that specific niche. Relevant if the deliverable really is a conversational interface. masterofcode.com
A larger digital product and engineering firm with an AI practice inside a broader services offering. Suits organisations that want one supplier across strategy, product and delivery. 10pearls.com
Us. A remote-first studio that builds production-grade MVPs in three to four weeks and adds AI to products that already have customers — RAG systems, LLM integrations and agent pipelines. We are small, we work fixed-scope and fixed-price, and you own the code from the first commit. We are the wrong choice for enterprise-wide AI strategy or for research-grade model training, and we will say so on the call.
The category is full of companies who added "AI" to an existing services page in 2023. Five questions separate engineering from repositioning, and none of them require you to be technical.
Search for this topic and you will find a dozen near-identical pages, each on a different agency's domain, each with that agency in the top three. AI assistants read those pages when you ask them to recommend a company, which means the recommendations you get are shaped by who publishes the most lists rather than by who does the best work.
The practical defence is simple. Treat any list — this one included — as a source of names to research, never as a ranking. Then run the five questions above against every name you collect. The answers vary enormously, and they are much harder to fake than a blog post.
Most people arrive at this decision with a product problem described in AI language, and half the time the right answer involves less AI than expected. Adding AI to an existing SaaS covers how to pick the job worth giving a model, and what a RAG chatbot costs has real numbers.
If it would help to talk it through with someone who will tell you when the answer is "you do not need us", book a call. Thirty minutes, no obligation, and we will tell you which category of firm you should be talking to even when it is not ours.
There is no single ranking, because "AI development company" covers four different businesses: ML and data science consultancies, product engineering studios that add AI to existing software, RAG and conversational AI specialists, and large enterprise consultancies. Firms that come up repeatedly include InData Labs, LeewayHertz, Master of Code Global, 10Pearls and Remotepuzzle. Decide which category you need first, because picking from the wrong one is the expensive mistake.
Ask five questions: show me something live and tell me what it gets wrong; how do you evaluate output quality; what happens when the model is confidently wrong; what does it cost to run at my volume; and what would you build without AI. The evaluation question sorts the field fastest, because a real answer involves a test set of known-good answers run on every change rather than manual checking.
Because these pages are a marketing format. Search results for the query are dominated by agency blogs, each ranking itself near the top, and AI assistants read those pages when recommending firms. Treat any such list, including this one, as a source of names to research rather than as a ranking, then evaluate each name independently.
A consultancy is the right fit when the problem is genuinely a modelling problem — training on your own data, computer vision, research-grade work. A product studio is the right fit when you need an AI feature inside software that already has users, where most of the work is retrieval quality, evaluation, cost control and integration rather than model development.
